JOSE MARIA LOPEZ MARTINEZ

Jose Maria Lopez Martinez is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), holding a Doctorate in Industrial Engineering. He served as Director of INSIA (University Institute of Automotive Research) from 2015 to 2023 and is currently the Special Commissioner of the Electric and Connected Vehicles PERTE (Ministry of Industry and Commerce) for 2023-2024. His academic career spans since 1995 with continuous contributions to automotive research and national technical committees.

His research centers on alternative vehicle propulsion systems and pollutant emissions. Notable achievements include designing the EPISOL hybrid electric vehicle with fuel cell and solar panels, developing series hybrid systems for military and waste collection vehicles, and leading current projects on hydrogen fuel cell trucks for firefighting, airports, and waste management. In emissions research, he pioneered NOx reduction in diesel engines through novel catalysts and contributed to biobutanol development in the H2020 WASTE2FUELS project.

Professor Lopez Martinez actively participates in national platforms including the National Automotive Technology Platform M2F and the National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Platform. He represents Spain in United Nations working groups in Geneva on pollution, energy, and electric vehicles as a delegate to GRPE, HDH, and EVE groups.
