Summary
John Lawler is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health and Kinesiology at Texas A&M University since 1997. His research focuses on exercise physiology, muscle biology, and aging-related mechanisms, with particular interest in oxidative stress, skeletal muscle atrophy, and cardiac remodeling. He holds a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from the University of Florida (1991), M.S. from Louisiana State University (1987), and B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University (1981).
Lawler’s work spans over 100 peer-reviewed publications, including studies on NADPH oxidase (Nox2) regulation in muscle dystrophy, exercise countermeasures for disuse atrophy, and aging heart protection. He has secured over $10M in federal grants (NASA, NIH, DOD) and serves as a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine.
- Key Research: Muscle atrophy mechanisms, oxidative stress pathways, exercise interventions, cardiac aging
- Recent Projects: Targeted antioxidant therapies for microgravity muscle loss, Nox2 inhibition in dystrophic muscles
- Leadership: ACSM Research Advisory Council, multiple grant review panels
