Assistant Professor JJ Hermes is a faculty member at Boston University specializing in white dwarf stars as the final evolutionary stage for over 97% of stars in the Galaxy. His research leverages pulsating and binary white dwarfs to determine fundamental stellar parameters and utilizes these objects as stable clocks for testing general relativity, detecting giant planets, and observing stellar evolution on human timescales.
He received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Texas at Austin.
His primary research interests include:
- White Dwarf Stars
- Asteroseismology
- Time-domain Astrophysics
- Space-based Photometry
- Persistent Gravitational Wave Sources
- Exoplanet Detection
- Tests of General Relativity
Dr. Hermes leads the Boston University White Dwarf (BUWD) research group, conducting high-precision observations of stellar endpoints through ground-based and space-based photometry. The group's research hub is accessible at http://sites.bu.edu/buwd/.
