Jim Fuller is a Professor of Theoretical Astrophysics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). His research focuses on diverse topics including Saturn's moons, massive stars, supernovae, asteroseismology, magnetic fields in red giants, tidal interactions in binary systems, and the dynamics of planetary migration. He leads a research group comprising undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs working on projects such as binary star mass transfer, red supergiant mass loss, and Saturn ring seismology.
His group's work includes hydrodynamic simulations of stellar interactions, detecting magnetic fields in stars via asteroseismology, and studying pre-supernova outbursts as potential warning signs for stellar explosions. Notable collaborations involve the ZTF survey for merging white dwarfs and resonance locking models for planetary migration. He actively mentors students, with recent graduates pursuing postdoctoral fellowships at institutions like Carnegie Observatories and Princeton University.
Key research areas include:
- Mass transfer in binary stars and their evolution into supernovae or black holes.
- Seismological analysis of Saturn's interior using ring dynamics.
- Pre-supernova outbursts and their observational signatures.
- Tidal effects on exoplanet and moon migration.
- Asteroseismic detection of stellar mergers and magnetic fields in red giants.
