J.W.M. Hilgenkamp

Prof. J.W.M. Hilgenkamp is a Professor of Applied Physics & Nanotechnology and Scientific Director of the MESA+ Institute at the University of Twente. He holds fellowships from the American Physical Society (APS) and the Netherlands Academy of Engineering (NAE). His academic roles include past Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology (2014–2018) and part-time Professor at Leiden University (2009–2014). He earned his PhD in Applied Physics from the University of Twente in 1995, with a thesis on 'High-Tc dc SQUID Magnetometers', and holds an MSc in Applied Physics from the same institution (1991).

His research focuses on superconductivity, nanotechnology, and oxide electronics, with notable contributions to energy-efficient computing (NL-ECO initiative), interface magnetism, and resistive switching devices. His work spans interdisciplinary collaborations, including roles in global science councils and Dutch national research programs like FOM.

Key scientific achievements include imaging ferromagnetism control in oxide heterostructures, developing vanadium dioxide-based memristors, and studying quantum phenomena in superconductors. He has coordinated major grants, such as the VICI and VIDI from NWO, and received the Central Education Prize (2007).
