J.B. Mayo, Jr. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the College of Education and Human Development, University of Minnesota. He earned his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of South Florida, focusing on gender and sexuality within social studies education.
His research explores the integration of LGBTQ+ themes into standard curricula, particularly examining the historical roles of Two Spirit individuals in Native American communities and the impact of Genders & Sexualities Alliances (GSAs) in schools. His work addresses challenges faced by queer educators and the symbolic violence against LGBTQ+ communities in educational settings.
Recent publications highlight his contributions to queer pedagogy, multicultural education, and social justice. He has received multiple awards, including the Josie R. Johnson Human Rights and Social Justice Award (2016) and the Marty and Jack Rossmann Faculty Development Award (2019).
