J. Margo Brooks Carthon is a Professor of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, where she holds the Tyson Family Endowed Term Chair for Gerontological Research. She serves as the Director of the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing and Associate Director of the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research.

Dr. Brooks Carthon’s research focuses on health disparities, nursing workforce diversity, and equity-centered transitional care models. Her work demonstrates how nurse staffing levels and work environments disproportionately impact marginalized patients, particularly older Black adults. She pioneered the THRIVE intervention to address systemic inequities in post-discharge care for Medicaid-insured populations.
Her recent publications analyze intersections between machine learning, social determinants of health, and nurse-driven policy reform. She has received prestigious grants from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Rita and Alex Hillman Foundation, emphasizing her leadership in health equity research.
