J. Gary Eden is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois, where he has been affiliated since 1979. He currently holds the Gilmore Family Professorship and serves as Director of the Laboratory for Optical Physics and Engineering. Additionally, he is a Research Professor in the Coordinated Science Laboratory and the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory, with faculty affiliate appointments in Bioengineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering.

His research spans atomic, molecular, and ultrafast laser spectroscopy, ultraviolet lasers and lamps, and microcavity plasma devices. He has co-discovered groundbreaking technologies such as the KrCl rare gas-halide excimer laser and developed optical techniques for observing physical phenomena.
Scientific honors include the Harold E. Edgerton Award (2010), C.E.K. Mees Medal (2007), IEEE Third Millennium Medal (2000), and Fellowships in IEEE, APS, OSA, AAAS, and SPIE. He has directed 49 PhD dissertations and co-founded two companies: Eden Park Illumination and EP Purification.
