Professor J. Evan Ward leads the Marine Sciences Department at the University of Connecticut, focusing on marine animal-environment interactions, particularly in benthic invertebrates like commercially vital bivalves. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Delaware and has held academic roles since 1994, including Fulbright Professorships in Panama and the UK.
His research explores particle capture mechanisms, nanoparticle toxicity, microplastic ingestion, and microbiome dynamics in bivalves. Key projects include studying microplastic impacts on oysters and mussels, TEP production in marine aggregates, and nanomaterial bioavailability. Ward collaborates internationally, with grants from NSF and NOAA.
He advises multiple Ph.D. and M.Sc. students and oversees research staff including Dr. Lisa Nigro. Ward’s work bridges ecology, toxicology, and aquaculture, with over 100 publications since 1989. His lab emphasizes field and lab studies, combining molecular biology with ecological modeling.
Recent articles highlight microplastic distribution in aquaculture, gut microbiome analysis, and nanoparticle effects. He advocates for rigorous experimental standards in microplastic research and explores bioremediation via bivalve filtration.
