Dr. J. Chris Bachman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA), within the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology. He leads the Sustainable Technology Lab and directs the Innovation and Design Center overseeing the ECST Makerspace. His research focuses on batteries, fuel cells, electrolyzers, sustainable engineering, and education. Dr. Bachman has secured grants including a NASA/JPL Collaborative Grant for high-temperature lithium-ion batteries and lunar 3D printing, and was awarded the 2025 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award.
Education: He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from MIT (2017), with a minor in Education, focusing on organic electrodes and solid-state electrolytes. He also earned a M.S. (2012) and B.S. (2010) in Mechanical Engineering from UC Davis, with a thesis on PEMFC flow fields.
Research Interests: His work spans electrochemical energy storage systems, sustainable technology development, and engineering education. He emphasizes innovation through projects like the Golden Eagle Makers and IMPACT LA initiatives, aiming to bridge academia and industry. His labs investigate novel materials for batteries and fuel cells, alongside additive manufacturing applications in space exploration.
Teaching and Leadership: Teaches courses in engineering design, thermodynamics, and vehicle systems. Advises student teams like the Baja SAE and Charging Eagles EV. He is an LGBTQ+ ally and has received multiple awards for teaching and service, including Cal State LA’s Outstanding Professor Award (2023).
Grants and Collaborations: PI on NASA/JPL grants and co-PI for the Materials Characterization Lab. Engaged with centers like PREM and CREST CATSUS. His research integrates computational modeling with experimental validation to advance sustainable energy solutions.
