Prof. Dr. Ivo Wallimann-Helmer is a Professor of Environmental Humanities at the University of Fribourg and Director of the Interfacultary Environmental Sciences and Humanities Institute. His research focuses on climate justice, technological innovation for sustainability, and the ethical dimensions of climate adaptation and loss-and-damage governance. He holds a PhD in Philosophy and has held academic positions at the University of Zurich and other institutions. His work bridges environmental ethics, policy analysis, and interdisciplinary sustainability science.
Educations: PhD in Philosophy (2010, University of Zurich), studies in philosophy and German literature (Zurich/Berlin).
Research interests include:
- Global and intergenerational justice in climate action
- Responsibility differentiation in environmental practice
- Climate ethics and geoengineering governance
- Food security and biodiversity conservation
Key projects: Director of the 2021 EurSafe conference on food security and climate ethics, leading SNSF-funded projects on ethical frameworks for environmental decision-making. His work emphasizes practical ethics and policy-relevant solutions.
Labs/Teams: Directs the UniFR_ESH Institute, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams on climate justice, adaptation limits, and sustainability ethics.
