Iulia-Karin Patrut is Professor of German Literature in a European Context at the European University of Flensburg, where she also serves as Vice President for Research & Knowledge Transfer. Her academic career spans multiple German institutions including University of Trier, Paderborn, and Lüneburg, with expertise in German-language literature from the 17th to the 21st century, European literary and cultural studies, and German-Jewish literature.
Her research focuses on inclusion/exclusion studies, postcolonial and gender studies, representation of Roma ('Zigeuner'), migration studies, and trans-European literature. She has published extensively including monographs such as Phantasma Nation: 'Zigeuner' und Juden als Grenzfiguren des 'Deutschen' (1770-1920) and Schwarze Schwester - Teufelsjunge. Ethnizität und Geschlecht bei Paul Celan und Herta Müller. She has co-edited the Der Neue Weltengarten yearbook since 2015 and numerous academic volumes.
Her scholarly work demonstrates a consistent focus on boundary negotiations, representations of 'otherness,' and intercultural encounters in European literature. Recent publications examine temporal theory in Musil, exhaustion in Kafka, and new approaches to German-Jewish literature through contemporary works like Katja Petrowskaja's Vielleicht Esther.
She has supervised doctoral dissertations on topics including intercultural memory, Adorno's dictum, Paul Celan's critical poetics, and reception of German theater in the Arab world. Her teaching covers literary history, cultural studies, and literary theory with courses on European literature, transnational perspectives, and literary didactics.
Patrut has organized major conferences including 'Globalized Memory Cultures and Counter-Memories: Representations of National Socialism, Holocaust and Exile in Peripheralized Literatures' (2018) and 'Europe in Transition: Intercultural Transfer Processes - International Interpretation Horizons' (2017), demonstrating her leadership in the field of intercultural German studies.
