Dr Itzelle Medina-Perea is a Lecturer in Information Systems at the University of Sheffield's School of Information, Journalism and Communication since September 2023. She holds a BA from UNAM (Mexico), MA and PhD from the University of Sheffield. Her research focuses on Critical Data Studies, examining how ideational and material factors influence data flows and practices, particularly in healthcare sectors. She has contributed to major projects like Patterns in Practice (AHRC-funded) and Living with Data (Nuffield-funded), collaborating with organizations like GSK, JISC, DWP, and BBC. She teaches modules in Information Systems, Data Science, and Librarianship. Medina-Perea actively engages with interdisciplinary networks such as The Public Data Lab and serves as Co-editor of Data & Policy Journal's Algorithmic Governance section. Her work critiques data-driven systems' societal impacts and advocates for ethical data practices.
