Issei Kato is an Assistant Professor at Waseda University's School of Human Sciences, where he conducts research in thermoregulation, thermal sensation, and body temperature physiology. He joined the faculty in April 2024 after completing his Ph.D. in Human Sciences from Waseda University in 2023 and holding JSPS Research Fellowships.
Dr. Kato received his doctoral degree from Waseda University's Graduate School of Human Sciences in 2023, following master's studies at the same institution from 2018-2020. His academic journey began with undergraduate studies at Waseda University from 2014-2018.
His research focuses on understanding human thermal perception mechanisms, particularly how we sense humidity, wetness, and temperature through various physiological pathways. Dr. Kato employs a multidisciplinary approach combining neuroscience, physiology, and biomedical engineering to investigate these phenomena. His work has important applications in sports medicine, occupational health, and the development of wearable temperature monitoring technologies.
Dr. Kato's publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on thermal physiology and sensory mechanisms, with recent work expanding into wearable sensor technology for core body temperature monitoring. His research often involves human subject studies examining physiological responses to various thermal challenges, with notable findings regarding surgical mask usage during exercise in hot environments.

Dr. Kato teaches courses including Seminar I (Cognitive Neuroscience), Seminar of Graduation Thesis Research I, and Introduction to Health Science and Social Welfare at Waseda University. He is actively involved in research projects such as "Elucidation of the neural basis related to wetness sensation," which uses fMRI and EEG to investigate the brain mechanisms underlying wet perception.
His current research involves developing and validating wearable sensors for continuous core body temperature monitoring, with applications in sports and labor fields. Dr. Kato collaborates extensively with researchers in physiology, neuroscience, and biomedical engineering, with Kei Nagashima being a frequent collaborator.
