Ismo Pölönen is a Professor of Environmental Law (Bioeconomy and Natural Resources Law) at the University of Eastern Finland's Law School within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies. He earned his PhD in Environmental Impact Assessment (2007) and became a Docent in Environmental Law (2012). His expertise spans EU and Finnish environmental law, focusing on mining, forest legislation, land use planning, and public participation rights. He leads sub-projects in the Strategic Research Council-funded CORE consortium and the Academy of Finland-backed TRANAPLAN consortium, examining regulatory frameworks for environmental planning and land use.
Research Interests: Collaborative governance, environmental impact assessment, mining law, natural resource management, and planning law. His work bridges legal theory with practical implementation, emphasizing interdisciplinary and international collaboration.
Projects & Grants: Leads legal-scientific research in CORE (collaborative environmental planning) and TRANAPLAN (land use planning jurisprudence). Active in initiatives like CAMI (mineral governance) and RELIEF (legal resilience in sustainability). Collaborates with CCEEL, CEMMS, and SOBIO research groups.
Labs/Teams: Part of the Center for Climate Change, Energy and Environmental Law (CCEEL), the Center for Mining, Minerals and Society (CEMMS), and the Social Scientific Biosociety Research Network (SOBIO).
