Isao Murahashi

Dr. Isao Murahashi is a cultural anthropologist and African studies scholar serving as a Specially Appointed Researcher at the African Studies Centre, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (ASC-TUFS) since 2020. He concurrently holds a Fellowship at the Bayreuth Academy for Advanced African Studies, University of Bayreuth. His research centers on displacement dynamics, migration governance, and borderland communities across East Africa, with extensive fieldwork in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Uganda, and Kenya.

Murahashi earned his Master's degree from Kyoto University's Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies (2005) followed by seven years as a journalist at Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK). He completed his PhD in Human Sciences at Osaka University in 2019, where his dissertation examined South Sudanese conflict and peacebuilding. His academic trajectory bridges professional journalism with deep ethnographic engagement in post-conflict settings.

His research program systematically investigates three core themes: displacement economies in African refugee settlements, global humanitarian governance mechanisms controlling migrant mobility, and place-making practices of displaced communities. Complementary work explores Eastern Nilotic political systems, pre-colonial African ironmaking, and archival film repatriation. This multidisciplinary approach integrates political ecology, economic anthropology, and visual studies to analyze how cross-border mobility reshapes borderland socio-political landscapes.

Publication trends reveal consistent focus on Ugandan-South Sudanese border regions, examining land contestation, resource trade, and refugee-host community interactions through prolonged conflict lenses. His work demonstrates methodological rigor in tracing timber/cattle trade networks, relief operation economies, and historical cross-border migration patterns, positioning refugee settlements as dynamic nodes generating complex (im)mobilities of people, goods, and information.
