Isabelle Guyon

Isabelle Guyon is a Professor of Big Data at Université Paris-Saclay, where she joined in 2016 and was granted a teaching chair in Big Data followed by an Artificial Intelligence chair from the ANR. She is a member of the Tackling the Underspecified (TAU) research team in collaboration with Inria Saclay and the Interdisciplinary Digital Science Laboratory (LISN), which includes Université Paris-Saclay, CNRS, CentraleSupélec, and Inria.

Specializing in machine learning and artificial intelligence, Guyon's research focuses on algorithms that learn and classify data. Her seminal work developing Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithms with Bernhard Schölkopf and Vladimir Vapnik in the 1990s at Bell Laboratories revolutionized the field of machine learning. These algorithms, cited over 11,000 times, originally served as classification tools but have since expanded to numerous applications including spam filtering and medical diagnosis. Her research integrates wide-margin algorithms developed by Vapnik in the 1960s with Kernel methods she studied during her PhD, creating powerful tools for data classification and optimization.

Guyon has received significant recognition for her contributions, most notably the BBVA Foundation award for her work on SVM algorithms. She founded ChaLearn, a non-profit organization that organizes machine learning challenges in partnership with entities like the Île-de-France region, Dassault, and RTE. Her current research includes developing machine learning methods to optimize electricity distribution on the French grid in collaboration with RTE.

A passionate advocate for democratizing artificial intelligence, Guyon believes making AI methods accessible to as many people as possible leads to better utilization at all levels. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes understanding data fundamentals and the inner workings of machine learning methods rather than using them blindly. She previously founded Clopinet, a machine learning consultancy in California, while raising her children, before returning to France and joining Université Paris-Saclay.
