Dr Isabella Calder serves as a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Suffolk's School of Business, Arts, Social Sciences and Technology, teaching BSc (Hons) and MA Criminology courses while co-leading the Crime People, Justice and Security research group at the Institute of Social Justice.
Her academic journey commenced with a PhD from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), followed by research associate positions at the University of Cambridge (CCHPR) and King's College London (ICPR), prior to teaching roles at LSE and the University of the West of Scotland.
Dr Calder's research spans policing, prison systems, and social justice, with current projects examining Suffolk's re-homing of rough sleepers during the Covid-19 pandemic, top-up-shops, internet platforms in sex work, homelessness interventions, and crypto drug markets. Her work consistently addresses intersections between criminal justice institutions and vulnerable populations.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
She supervises PhD candidates in indeterminate/life prison sentences, digital sex work, homelessness, and crypto drug markets while securing research funding from the Ministry of Justice, National Health Service, Metropolitan Police Service, Local Government, and charities including the Royal Society of Arts and St Giles Trust.
As co-leader of the Institute of Social Justice's Crime People, Justice and Security research cluster, she directs collaborative projects addressing systemic challenges in criminal justice and social welfare systems.
