Isabel Schnabel

Isabel Schnabel is Professor of Financial Economics at the University of Bonn (currently on leave) and a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB) since 2020, where she is responsible for market operations, research, and statistics. Previously, she served as spokesperson of the Cluster of Excellence "ECONtribute: Markets & Public Policy" and was a member of the German Council of Economic Experts from 2014 to 2019.

Her research focuses on banking stability and regulation, central banking, international finance, economic history, and financial law and economics. She has made significant contributions to understanding asset price bubbles, systemic risk, financial crises, and banking regulation. Her work often bridges historical perspectives with contemporary financial issues, examining crises from both modern and historical contexts.

Schnabel's publications show a clear trajectory exploring financial stability from multiple angles - analyzing modern banking systems while drawing insights from historical financial crises. Her research spans theoretical frameworks, policy implications, and historical case studies, with particular attention to the relationship between financial markets, regulation, and macroeconomic stability.
