Dr. Isaac Y. Kim, MD, PhD, MBA is Professor and Chair of the Department of Urology at Yale School of Medicine, Chief of Urology, and Co-Leader of the Cancer Signaling Networks Program at Yale Cancer Center. As a urologic oncologist and surgeon, he specializes in the treatment, management, and prevention of prostate cancer, with particular expertise in advanced and metastatic disease.
Dr. Kim's research interests focus on two primary areas: the role of surgery in men with metastatic prostate cancer, and the mechanisms of treatment resistance in prostate cancer cells. His clinical work centers on minimally invasive robotic surgery, having performed over 2,500 robotic prostatectomies, with a focus on helping patients navigate and understand their disease. He has established a same-day radical prostatectomy program using single-port robotic surgery to minimize patient discomfort and recovery time.
His research portfolio demonstrates consistent productivity across prostate cancer diagnostics, treatment, and outcomes. Recent publications address important topics including PSMA imaging, management of radio-recurrent prostate cancer, surgical outcomes in elderly patients, and novel approaches to treatment resistance. His work spans clinical trials, molecular research, and healthcare disparities in prostate cancer care.
Dr. Kim leads the SIMCAP trial, a major multi-institution study evaluating cytoreductive prostatectomy in metastatic disease, and maintains active collaborations with numerous researchers across Yale and other institutions. His educational background includes medical and doctoral degrees from Northwestern University, a Wharton MBA, and clinical training at Baylor College of Medicine and NIH.
As Chair of Urology, Dr. Kim oversees one of the larger urology departments in the nation, attracting patients from regions far beyond New Haven. He emphasizes delivering innovative care with compassion, noting that 'when a patient and concerned family members come in with a prostate cancer diagnosis, and I'm able to take care of it and see how he recovers, it is truly a privilege and a blessing.'
