Isaac Ginis is a Professor of Physical Oceanography at the Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island. His research spans tropical cyclone-ocean interactions, surface waves in high-wind conditions, and numerical modeling of air-sea fluxes. He contributes to operational hurricane models like GFDL and HWRF, and develops educational tools such as the Hurricanes: Science and Society website and iBook.
- Education:
- PhD in Geophysics, Institute of Experimental Meteorology, Russia
- BS/MS in Mathematics, Kabardino-Balkarian State University, Russia
Dr. Ginis's research focuses on coupled ocean-atmosphere systems, with emphasis on hurricane dynamics, wave-ocean interactions, and coastal impact modeling. His work has significantly improved hurricane intensity forecasting and operational prediction systems.
His group advances physics in models like COAMPS-TC, studying surface wave effects on upper ocean responses and coastal hazards. He also pioneered Hurricanes: Science and Society, an educational platform integrating interdisciplinary hurricane science for classrooms nationwide.
