Joe Zambon is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at North Carolina State University, part of the Ocean Observing and Modeling Group. He holds a Ph.D. from NC State University (2014) and completed postdoctoral research developing the Coupled Northwest Atlantic Prediction System (CNAPS), a real-time operational model integrating ocean, atmosphere, and wave dynamics. His research focuses on atmosphere-ocean interactions during tropical cyclones, coastal flooding mechanisms, and coupled modeling systems. He is affiliated with the College of Sciences and contributes to the PEACH program studying Hatteras coastal dynamics.
Education: Ph.D. in Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences (NC State University, 2014). Notable research includes Hurricane Florence impact studies, sediment dispersal modeling, and coastal ocean pathway analysis. His work emphasizes numerical investigations of compound flooding and real-time model validation.
Research interests span coastal oceanography, hurricane modeling, coupled systems (COAWST), and environmental contaminants. Recent publications (2020–2024) highlight contributions to understanding hurricane-induced flooding, SST effects on tropical cyclones, and coastal dynamics at Cape Hatteras.
Awards: None explicitly listed. Professional service includes volunteer firefighting with Swift Creek Rural Fire Department and participation in Pilots N Paws. Extracurricular activities include SCUBA diving, ice hockey, and private piloting.
