Isaac Barnes May holds a PhD in Religious Studies and a graduate certificate in American Studies from the University of Virginia (2020). He served as an Assistant Professor of American Studies at UVA during the 2020–2021 academic year and concurrently as a research fellow with UVA’s Project on Lived Theology. His research explores intersections of religion, race, and American cultural history.

Research Interests: Isaac’s work focuses on “God-Optional Religion in Twentieth-Century America,” analyzing how religious identity evolves beyond traditional theism. His projects engage themes like secularism, race, and interdisciplinary approaches to Jewish studies. He collaborates with institutions like the Race, Religion, and Democracy Lab.
