Isaac A. Kamola is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Trinity College since 2013. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Minnesota (2010), alongside an M.A. from the same institution and a B.A. from Whitman College. His research focuses on the political economy of higher education, African anticolonial theory, and critical globalization studies. Notable works include Free Speech and Koch Money (2021) and Making the World Global (2019), examining the intersections of academia, state power, and global capital. He has held fellowships at Wesleyan University’s Center for the Humanities and Johns Hopkins’ ACLS New Faculty program.
Teaching emphasizes critical engagement with global systems through courses like Theories of African Decolonization and World Economy of Higher Education. His pedagogical innovations include integrating multimedia analysis and archival research to challenge students’ preconceptions about Africa and globalization. He has also developed frameworks for evaluating academic freedom and resisting right-wing political attacks on universities.
Research spans over two decades, with publications in International Studies Quarterly, British Journal of Politics and International Relations, and Cultural Politics. His work critiques neoliberal transformations in academia, explores postcolonial intellectual traditions, and dissects the political economy of global knowledge production. Current projects include tracing funding networks behind campus free speech controversies and rethinking university roles in global systems.
Grants and awards include Trinity College’s Center for Teaching and Learning fellowship (2017–2018), supporting pedagogical development. His academic service includes editorial roles in Global Flows and Politics of African Anticolonial Archive. He actively engages with public discourse through Inside Higher Ed and the Chronicle of Higher Education, addressing issues like campus reform and academic integrity.
