Iryna Kaplan serves as a Visiting Researcher at the Center for Religious Studies (CERES) at Ruhr University Bochum, with office location at Universitätsstr. 90a, 44789 Bochum (Office 2.08). She concurrently holds membership in the Kyiv-based NGO "Workshop for the Academic Study of Religion" and previously managed the 2021-2022 project "Combining the Incompatible: Making the Problems of Feminist and LGBTQ+ Believers Visible in Ukraine".
Her research critically examines tensions at the intersection of religious traditions, gender identity, and sexual orientation within Ukrainian cultural contexts. Key thematic focuses include:
- Visibility challenges for feminist adherents in religious communities
- LGBTQ+ experiences within faith-based frameworks
- Sociopolitical dynamics of religious minorities in Eastern Europe
- Intersectional approaches to theology and social justice
This work establishes foundational scholarship on marginalized religious identities in post-Soviet societies, emphasizing Ukraine's unique socio-religious landscape through collaborative NGO-academic partnerships.
Kaplan's project management demonstrates applied engagement with community-driven research, bridging academic analysis and grassroots advocacy for underrepresented religious groups.
