Irma T. Elo is the Tamsen and Michael Brown Presidential Professor and Professor of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. She currently serves as Principal Investigator for an NIA-funded study on geographic divergence in American mortality (1990-2015) and holds research affiliations with the Population Studies Center and the Population Aging Research Center.
- PhD in Demography and Public Affairs from Princeton University (1990)
Her research focuses on socioeconomic and racial/ethnic disparities in health, cognition, and mortality across the life course. She has extended this work to examine health outcomes among racial/ethnic immigrant subgroups and demographic estimation of mortality patterns.
Dr. Elo has held leadership roles in major academic organizations including:
- Chair, Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)
- Member, Census Bureau’s Scientific Advisory Committee (CSAC)
- Chair, PAA’s Committee on Population Statistics
- International Advisory Board member for Swedish Initiative for Research on Microdata
