Dr. Irma Harper is an Associate Professor in the Department of Education at West Texas A&M University (WTAMU), affiliated with the Terry B. Rogers College of Education and Social Sciences. She also holds the title of Associate Vice Chancellor, Emeritus in the Texas A&M University System. Dr. Harper joined WTAMU in 2020 and specializes in teaching doctoral-level courses such as Leadership in Education and Introduction to Higher Education, while mentoring doctoral candidates.
Her educational background includes a B.S. in Human Sciences (1980, Stephen F. Austin State University), an M.Ed. in Elementary Education (1986, Texas A&M University-Commerce), and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership (2002, Texas A&M University-Kingsville).
Dr. Harper’s research focuses on rural school leadership, leadership styles, teacher attrition, and mentoring strategies. She has extensive experience in academic administration, including a role as Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs at the Texas A&M University System, where she secured over $10 million in grants for educational colleges. Previously, she taught in public schools and served as a professor at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
She received the 2022 instructional responsibilities award from her college, recognizing her teaching excellence. Her career spans roles in public education, teacher preparation, and higher education leadership, with a strong emphasis on grant-funded initiatives and educational administration.
