Dr. Iris Jonkers is an Associate Professor at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Medical Sciences, affiliated with the Groningen Institute for Gastrointestinal Genetics and Immunology (3GI). Her research focuses on the genetic and immunological mechanisms underlying celiac disease and related gastrointestinal disorders, with particular expertise in microbiome interactions and genetic variation.
Her research interests span Celiac Disease, Genetics, Immunology, and Gastrointestinal Disorders, with specific focus on X-chromosome inactivation, genome-wide association studies, and the role of intestinal epithelial cells in autoimmune responses. Dr. Jonkers employs cutting-edge methodologies including human organoids, organ-on-chip technology, and microbiome analysis to investigate disease mechanisms.
Dr. Jonkers' recent publications (2025) demonstrate her leadership in celiac disease research, with work spanning microbiome analysis, genetic studies, and innovative disease modeling approaches. Her research shows consistent focus on understanding the complex interplay between genetic factors, immune responses, and environmental triggers in gastrointestinal autoimmune disorders.
- Mentorship award in ISSCD M-in-M program for Mohammad Sayeef Alam (NTNU, Trondheim, Norway), 2023
Dr. Jonkers actively supervises PhD students including Ineke Tan (researching early detection of celiac disease) and serves on PhD defense committees. She regularly presents at professional conferences including the NCV patient day and gives academic presentations on topics like 'Triggers and Icebergs' in celiac disease. Her external collaborations include membership in the European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN).
Her research group at the 3GI institute works at the intersection of genetics, immunology, and gastrointestinal physiology, contributing significantly to understanding celiac disease pathogenesis and potential therapeutic approaches.
