Iris Adam is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Southern Denmark, affiliated with the SDU Climate Cluster. Her research focuses on the intersection of neuroscience, behavioral biology, and vocal communication, particularly in songbirds like the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata).
Her work explores how motor control and muscle physiology enable precise birdsong production, including the role of synchrotron imaging in mapping vocal anatomy. Recent projects like Why singing is golden (2025–2029) investigate vocal performance and muscle training in songbirds.
Key publications include studies on vocal fold innervation (Current Biology, 2021) and virtual environment simulations of singing behavior (Scientific Reports, 2022). Media coverage highlights her findings on daily vocal workouts and vocal muscle maintenance in birds.
Scientific Awards:
- Villum Young Investigator Grant (2024)
- Villum Experiment Grant (2020)
Her research is funded by private foundations and national agencies like the Carlsberg Foundation and the Danish Ministry of Education and Research.
