Research centers on climate-driven impacts on avian communication systems, specifically examining how rising temperatures disrupt songbird behavior across signaler-receiver dynamics. Laboratory work with zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) demonstrates reduced male vocalization and diminished female selectivity under heat stress, potentially lowering reproductive success. Current field studies extend this to threatened Bachman's sparrows (Peucaea aestivalis), bridging thermal physiology, behavioral ecology, and conservation science to address climate vulnerability in avian populations.
Dr. Coomes mentors undergraduate researchers through Skidmore's Biology Department programs, focusing on experimental design in behavioral ecology and climate response mechanisms.
