Irina Markina-Baum is an Assistant Teaching Professor and Director of the French & Italian Language Program at the University of Washington's Department of French and Italian Studies. She holds a PhD in French Studies from Princeton University (2022), an MA from Princeton (2016), and a BA summa cum laude in French and Italian with an Art History minor from the University of Pennsylvania (2013).
Her research focuses on 19th- and early 20th-century visual culture, literature, and civic culture. Her current book project, Institutionalizing Revolution: The Official Mural Art Campaign of the Third Republic, examines public murals commissioned by the French Third Republic for Parisian town halls (1873–1914). She explores how these murals shaped democratic citizenship and francité within civic spaces. Additional interests include gender and nationalism, visual poetry, ekphrasis, and 19th-century novels.
Irina is dedicated to pedagogy, teaching French and Italian language courses (100–300 levels) and coordinating UW’s Study Abroad Program in Perugia: Art and Food in the Green Heart of Italy. She is developing a business French module with support from the Global Business Center and Center for Canadian Studies.
Her research has been supported by prestigious institutions, including the Getty Research Institute and Phi Beta Kappa. She has presented work internationally in the US, France, and the UK.
