Irene Salinas Remiro

Irene Salinas Remiro is a Professor in the Department of Biology at The University of New Mexico, where she serves as Associate Chair. She is also affiliated with the Center for Evolutionary and Theoretical Immunology (CETI). As a comparative immunologist, her work emphasizes the diversity of immune systems across vertebrates.

Research Interests
Dr. Salinas investigates the evolution of mucosal immune systems in vertebrates, focusing on host-microbiota interactions. Her laboratory uses non-model organisms such as sharks, trout, zebrafish, lungfish, amphibians, and mammals to explore immune system complexity. Recent projects examine nasal immunity and neuroimmune communication in the olfactory-brain axis during viral pathogen detection.
