Irene Perini is a Principal Research Engineer and Docent at Linköping University, affiliated with the Center for Social and Affective Neuroscience (CSAN) and the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences (BKV). Her research focuses on social neuroscience, addiction medicine, and neuropsychology, employing methods like functional MRI (fMRI), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and behavioral analysis.
Education highlights include a PhD in Medicine from the University of Gothenburg (2013), an MA in Neuropsychology from the University of Bologna (2008), and a BA in Psychology from the University of Parma (2006). She has held roles including postdoctoral researcher (2014–2015) and principal research engineer at CSAN since 2015. Notable awards include the ERNI-HSF Exchange Grant (2011).
Her work explores brain mechanisms underlying social interactions, addiction, and mental health disorders. Recent studies include investigating negative social bias in adolescents with nonsuicidal self-injury and the role of the cannabinoid system in addiction resilience. She has led randomized controlled trials on TMS for alcohol dependence and contributed to methodological advancements in fMRI drug cue reactivity studies.
Key collaborations involve the Heilig Translational Psychiatry Lab and the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine. Current research themes integrate neuroimaging, pharmacology, and behavioral science to address stress coping mechanisms and neural pathways in psychiatric disorders.
