Irene Monasterolo is a Professor of Climate Finance at EDHEC Business School and EDHEC-Risk Institute in Nice, France. She also holds positions as a senior research fellow at Vienna University of Economics and Business and Boston University, and is a visiting scholar at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria. Her research focuses on climate finance, financial risks in the low-carbon transition, and the development of methodologies like the Climate Stress Test and the EIRIN model.
Educated at the University of Bologna (PhD in Agri-food economics), she completed postdoctoral research at Cambridge and Boston University. Her work bridges climate policy and financial systems, analyzing macro-financial implications of climate policies and compounding risks like those from the pandemic.
Key projects include collaborations with the World Bank (macro-financial criticality analysis) and the European Central Bank (climate risk double materiality studies). She co-developed the EIRIN model for fiscal/monetary policy analysis and the CLIMAFIN tool for financial institutions.
Her research is published in top journals like Nature Climate Change and Science, and she contributes to policy initiatives like the G24 V20 Task Force on Climate, Development, and the IMF.
