Irene Bevilacqua is a Research Fellow at the University of Bologna's Department of Philosophy, affiliated with the PRIN 2022 project 'Coping with the Environment: Economy, Ecology, and Sustainability in Early Modern Northern Italy (1500-1800)'. Her work focuses on historical relationships between humans and the environment, particularly water management in the Papal States and Po Valley. She holds a PhD in Modern History from the University of Pisa (2012) and a Master's from Sapienza University of Rome (2007).
Research interests include hydraulic engineering, land reclamation, and socio-political dynamics in early modern Italy. She has published a monograph on papal territorial policies in the Pontine Marshes and contributed to journals like Città & Storia. Her 2015 study on Dutch land reclamation strategies and 2010 analysis of Rome's Acqua Paola project exemplify her focus on technical and symbolic dimensions of water management.
Awarded the 2011 Fondazione Roma Sapienza Prize for her essay on 17th-century Rome's water infrastructure, she has presented at conferences including the AISU Urban History Conference (2017) and the Italian Association of Public History (2017). She taught monographic courses on Papal water management and served as a postdoctoral fellow at the B. Croce Institute in Naples (2014-2016).
