Professor Irena Frances Creed is affiliated with the Department of Physical & Environmental Sciences at the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on planetary health, climate change, watershed sciences, and freshwater systems. She holds the Wallenberg Professorship (2021-2024) and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (2019). Her work bridges science and policy, addressing issues like harmful algal blooms, ecosystem services, and communities-at-risk.
- Education: Honorary Doctor of Agricultural Sciences from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (2019)
Her research interests span terrestrial-aquatic linkages, biogeochemical cycles, and scenario planning for sustainability. She actively investigates how climate change drives cyanobacteria blooms in remote lakes and explores nature-based solutions for green sector resilience.
Recent publications emphasize freshwater biodiversity decline, harmful algal blooms in the Great Lakes, and the impacts of dissolved organic matter on phytoplankton communities. Her work integrates limnology, ecology, and policy to address global environmental challenges.
- Awards: Bancroft Award (2020), Tier II Canada Research Chair (2007-2017)
Dr. Creed collaborates internationally, contributing to recovery plans for freshwater biodiversity and advocating for science-driven policy. She leads projects on wetland conservation and risk management for ecosystems under climate stress.
