Ira S. Weiss is a Clinical Professor of Accounting and Entrepreneurship at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, where he teaches advanced MBA courses in tax strategy, accounting, entrepreneurship and venture capital. His current teaching includes Taxes and Business Strategy, and Accounting for Entrepreneurs - from Start-up to IPO, which he developed in 2017 and now has 7 annual sections.
Professor Weiss specializes in corporate taxation, mutual fund taxation, accounting regulation, earnings management, and angel investing. His research investigates how tax considerations influence business decisions and investment strategies, with particular focus on tax planning behaviors in mutual funds and the relationship between financial reporting frequency and market information processing. In his teaching, he emphasizes practical application of tax-efficient business structuring, incorporating real private equity deal examples.
His scholarly contributions include significant publications in the Journal of Accounting and Economics and Journal of Contemporary Accounting and Economics, examining topics such as earnings timeliness, analyst coverage predictive power, and value-relevance of financial information over time. His multi-decade research on mutual fund tax planning spans forty-four years and six major tax changes, revealing important differences between open-end and closed-end fund behaviors.
