Ira Katznelson is the Ruggles Professor of Political Science and History at Columbia University. His career includes teaching and administrative roles at Columbia, the University of Chicago (1974–1983), and The New School (1983–1994), where he served as dean from 1983 to 1989. He earned a BA from Columbia University (1966) and a PhD in History from the University of Cambridge (1969).
His research focuses on liberal democracy, inequality, and political institutions, spanning U.S., European, and comparative contexts. Notable works include When Affirmative Action Was White (2005) and Fear Itself: The New Deal and the Origins of Our Time (2013), which won the Bancroft Prize. He has held leadership roles in professional organizations like the American Political Science Association (APSA) and the Social Science Research Council.
