Ira Didenkulova is a Professor in the Department of Mechanics at the University of Oslo, Norway, specializing in nonlinear wave dynamics with applications to tsunamis, storm surges, and coastal hazards. She serves as President of the Natural Hazards division at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) and Chief Editor of Earth System Dynamics.
Her education includes a Master of Science in Radiophysics from Nizhny Novgorod State University (2003), dual PhDs in Fluid Mechanics (Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University, 2006) and Civil Engineering (Tallinn University of Technology, 2008), and a Doctor of Science in Oceanography from P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology (2013).
Her research focuses on theoretical and experimental analysis of long wave propagation, transformation, and run-up on beaches, employing advanced mathematical modeling to address coastal safety challenges. Key applications include tsunami inundation prediction, freak wave formation mechanisms, and storm surge impacts on vulnerable shorelines.
Recent publications (2021-2024) reveal concentrated expertise in coastal hazard dynamics, with recurring themes in tsunami distribution modeling, freak wave statistics, solitary wave-boulder interactions, and atmospheric disturbance effects on coastal amplification across multiple geographical contexts.
Major awards include:
- 2019 IUGG Early Career Scientist Award
- 2016 L'Oréal-UNESCO International Rising Talents
- 2016 Humboldt Alumni Award
- 2015 Russian Academy of Sciences Professorship
- 2015 Marie Curie Alumni Association Career Award
- 2014 Russian Presidential Science Award
She secures competitive funding through fellowships (Marie Curie 2006/2009, Humboldt 2012/2016) and leads international projects like COST AGITHAR. Current editorial roles include Chief Editor of Earth System Dynamics and long-standing service on Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences.
Her work integrates with the University of Oslo's Mechanics research group and international consortia including Baltic Earth and the International Tsunami Commission, driving theoretical advances into practical coastal hazard mitigation frameworks.
