Ioni Lewis

Professor Ioni Lewis is a Professor in the School of Psychology & Counselling at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), affiliated with the Centre for Accident Research & Road Safety – Queensland (CARRS-Q). She holds a PhD and Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) from QUT. Her expertise lies in road safety advertising, message design, health communication, and behavioral change strategies. She has pioneered frameworks like the Step approach to Message Design and Testing (SatMDT), applied in high-risk behavior campaigns. Notable achievements include the 2016 Excellence in Evaluation Award for the 'Hand in Hand' child pedestrian campaign and a 2009 nationally competitive research fellowship.

Key research focuses include emotion’s role in persuasion, public education strategies, and evaluating road safety interventions. She has led projects funded by ARC and industry partners like the Transport Accident Commission. Awards also include contributions to national and international road safety conferences, including chair roles in major symposiums. Her work integrates quantitative and qualitative methods, addressing issues like speeding, distracted driving, and advanced vehicle technologies.

Professor Lewis has supervised doctoral research on topics like smartphone use by young drivers and cultural influences on road safety.
