Dr. Iona McCleery is an Associate Professor in Medieval History at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the School of History and the Institute for Medieval Studies. Her expertise spans Portuguese and Iberian history, medical history, food studies, and miracle narratives.
- PhD (2000) and MA (1994) from the University of St Andrews
- Previously taught at the Open University, University of Durham, and Edinburgh University
- Director of the Institute for Medieval Studies since 2007
Her research intersects four key areas: food and diet, medical practices, chronicles, and miracles. Recent publications explore climate impacts on medieval Portugal, colonial medicine frameworks, and historical dietary patterns.
Current projects include Reintegrating Body and Soul: Medicine and Community in Late Medieval Portugal and collaborations with the Centre for Medical Humanities. She supervises PhD students on topics ranging from surgical diagrams to emotional mentalities in hagiographies.
