Dr. John Merrington is an Examination Fellow in History at All Souls College, University of Oxford, and an Early Career Researcher specializing in early medieval cultural and intellectual history. His work focuses on sensory restraint and reform in Latin Europe (c. 500–900), emphasizing how moral teachings about the five senses shaped religious practices and therapeutic care.
His research integrates analysis of prayerbooks, hagiographies, and liturgical texts to explore how sensory management was tied to spiritual purity. Additional interests include early medieval historiography, particularly the works of Bede and Gregory of Tours. His 2024 English Historical Review article re-examines Bede’s engagement with Gregory of Tours’ historiography, while his 2022 study on Gregory of Tours’ building projects earned the First Publication Prize from Early Medieval Europe.
