معرفی
Prof. Ioannis Kourakis is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Khalifa University, UAE, where he contributes to the College of Engineering. He leads the Magnetospheric Modeling theme at the KU Space and Planetary Science Center and teaches courses such as Differential Equations and Numerical Analysis II.
Education:
- Doctorat de Sciences, ULB (Free University of Brussels), Belgium, 2002
- Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Teaching (PGCHET), Queen's University Belfast, UK, 2013
- DEA (MPhil BEL) Statistical Physics, ULB, Belgium, 2001
- DEA (MSc F) Molecular Spectroscopy and Materials Sciences, University of Burgundy, France, 1991
- Ptychio (BSc GR) in Physics, University of Crete, Greece, 1989
His research focuses on nonlinear waves and plasma physics, particularly in space environments. Key areas include soliton theory, electrostatic solitary waves in planetary magnetospheres, rogue waves, non-integrable PDEs, and non-Maxwellian particle distributions. He develops theoretical models using pseudopotential, KdV, and nonlinear Schrodinger frameworks for applications in space, laboratory plasmas, and materials science.
Prof. Kourakis has secured internal funding for two major research projects at Khalifa University: one on rogue waves in plasmas (CIRA-2021-064) and another on nonlinear wave modeling (FSU-2021-012). He has supervised four PhD graduates and over 45 master’s students, and currently mentors a team of postdoctoral researchers.
Scientific Awards and Recognitions:
- Distinguished Reviewer, Institute of Physics (IoP), UK (2021)
- Special Visiting Researcher (PVE), Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
- Joint Newton-FAPESP Fellowship at UNESP, Brazil
He has extensive academic service experience, including roles as Associate Editor for Plasma (MDPI), Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports (Nature Springer), and reviewer for NSERC Canada, EPSRC UK, and other national councils. He is actively involved in international collaborations with institutions in Greece, Brazil, India, South Africa, Germany, Belgium, and Australia.
Prof. Kourakis leads the Space and Planetary Science Group at KU, fostering interdisciplinary research in space science and planetary modeling. His team focuses on interpreting observational data from space missions and developing theoretical models for wave phenomena in space plasmas.
