Ioannis Kanakis is an Associate Professor at the Chester Medical School, University of Chester, within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Society. He holds an honorary position at the University of Liverpool and has served as a Senior Lecturer before his promotion in 2023. His academic background includes a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Patras, followed by an MSc in Applied Biochemistry and a PhD in Clinical Biochemistry focusing on bone biochemical markers in cancer-induced bone disease. He has postdoctoral experience at the University of Manchester and University of Liverpool, specializing in osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal epigenetics.
Research Interests: Dr. Kanakis’s work centers on biomarkers for disease diagnosis, musculoskeletal biology (osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, sarcopenia), and the role of microRNAs in epigenetic regulation. Collaborations include institutions like the University of Cambridge and NHS Trusts (Countess of Chester, Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt) for clinical studies on diabetic bone disease. He has published over 40 articles, reviews, and book chapters, achieving an h-index of 19.
Teaching & Supervision: He leads MSc programs in Diabetes and Respiratory Medicine, supervises over 70 dissertations, and is a PhD supervisor at Chester Medical School and the University of Liverpool. He also serves as an External Examiner for PhD and MRes programs at Liverpool and Manchester Metropolitan University.
Grants & Collaborations: Active collaborations span maternal nutrition effects on musculoskeletal development, involving institutions like the National University of Ireland Galway and University of East Anglia. His research emphasizes translational medicine, combining clinical and basic science approaches to address age-related musculoskeletal pathologies.
Awards: Holds the Fellowship of Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and a Home Office license for rodent research.
