Inês de Ornellas e Castro is an Assistant Professor (with Habilitation) in the Portuguese Studies Department at the School of Social Sciences and Humanities of NOVA University Lisbon. She is affiliated with the Institute for the Study of Literature and Tradition (IELT) as her research unit. Her academic career spans multiple institutions including appointments at the Graduate Center of City University of New York and involvement with international projects like the QS World University Rankings.
Dr. Ornellas e Castro's research focuses on Latin Literature with specialization in Food History across Antiquity and the Modern period. Her work examines Portuguese medical Latin texts from the XVI-XVIII centuries on dietetics, cultural studies on the body, and gender studies focusing on latinate women writers from the XV-XIX centuries. Her recent publications explore historical food practices, the relationship between food and medicine, sensory experiences of eating, and historical geographical texts.
