Professor Ingrid Hellström is Vice-Rector for Education and Professor of Elderly Care at Marie Cederschiöld University's Department of Nursing Sciences. Her research focuses on gerontological nursing, palliative care, and the experiences of people with long-term illnesses, particularly dementia. She developed the concept of 'couplehood' which considers couples living with dementia as a unit rather than separate individuals.
Her work examines the intersection of migration and dementia, nurses' professional practice in municipal home care, and relationship-based approaches to care. Hellström teaches gerontological nursing, care for people with cognitive illnesses, and qualitative research methods at undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels.
She has supervised four doctoral students to completion and currently supervises Anna Zhou's research on aging experiences of foreign-born individuals in Sweden. Hellström serves on national committees including the National Guidelines for Dementia Care at the National Board of Health and Welfare.
