Ingolf Bach

Ingolf Bach is a Professor at UMass Chan Medical School with joint appointments in Molecular, Cell and Cancer Biology, NeuroNexus Institute, Program in Molecular Medicine, and Radiology. He holds secondary appointments in Biochemistry and Molecular Biotechnology, Interdisciplinary Graduate Program, Neuroscience, and Translational Science at Morningside Graduate School.

Education includes: BA Biology (University of Konstanz), MA Molecular Biology (University of Konstanz), PhD Biotechnology (Paris Diderot University). His doctoral work was conducted at Pasteur Institute supported by Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation.

Research focuses on molecular mechanisms regulating differential gene expression during cell fate specification events, particularly through LIM domain proteins and associated cofactors. Key areas include: neuronal differentiation, X chromosome inactivation mechanisms, mammary gland development, and breast cancer pathogenesis using molecular, biochemical and genetic approaches in mouse models.

Publications predominantly explore X chromosome inactivation mechanisms, gene regulation during development, and cell fate decisions. Recent work (2021-2024) emphasizes molecular regulators of Xist expression and germ cell specification.

Leads research on neuronal cell fate specification and mentors rotation students and postdoctoral researchers. Laboratory applies genetic methods to study protein complexes in development and disease.
