Ingo Plag is a Professor and Chair of English Linguistics at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf since 2012. Previously, he held professorial positions at Universität Siegen (2000–2012) and Universität Hannover (1999–2000). His academic journey began as a Research Assistant at Philipps-Universität Marburg (1989–1995), progressing to Assistant Professor there (1995–1999). He has also held visiting roles at Victoria University Wellington (2011–2012) and the University of California, Santa Cruz (2004).
Plag holds an M.A. in Anglo-American Studies and Political Science (1989), a Dr. phil. in English Linguistics (1993), and a Habilitation (1998) from Philipps-Universität Marburg. His research focuses on phonetics, morphology, syntax, creole languages, second language acquisition, and experimental linguistics.
His publications explore compound stress patterns, creole typology, and morphological productivity. Key works include *Word-formation in English* (2003) and *Introduction to English Linguistics* (2007/2009). He has received the Opus-Magnum Award (2011) and serves as Editor-in-Chief of *Morphology* and former Editor of *Zeitschrift für Sprachwissenschaft*.
Plag’s research combines quantitative methods with theoretical linguistics, emphasizing empirical validation of morphological and phonological hypotheses. He has secured numerous grants from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and collaborates internationally on creole language studies and experimental morphology.
