Ingmar René Staude

Ingmar René Staude is a Senior Scientist in the Systematic Botany and Functional Biodiversity group at Leipzig University, where he has been conducting research and teaching since October 2021. He leads a DFG-funded project on protected areas for plant conservation in Germany and teaches quantitative ecology courses with a focus on R programming.

Education:

• PhD in Biodiversity Science (2017-2021) at German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv), thesis on systematic temporal turnover in plant communities.
• International MSc in Applied Ecology (2015-2017) from University of Poitiers, University of Coimbra, and Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, thesis on biodiversity erosion in Brazilian grasslands.
• BSc in Biology (2011-2015) from Freie Universität Berlin with emphasis on applied plant genetics, including Arctic fieldwork in Svalbard.

Staude's research spans interdisciplinary plant ecology, addressing urgent questions about urban conservation, community dynamics under global change, native plant-insect decline linkages, and the ecological impacts of non-native species. His work integrates empirical field studies with theoretical modeling to develop policy-relevant strategies for bending the curve of biodiversity loss while safeguarding planetary health.

Scientific Recognition:

• Otto-Bayer Fellowship for Arctic research in Greenland Sea and Svalbard (2014).

He currently directs a major DFG project (2024-2027) analyzing protected areas' effectiveness for plant biodiversity conservation in Germany, while mentoring students through hands-on field courses and statistical training. His methodological approach combines local-scale vegetation surveys with global biogeographic analyses.

Staude operates within Leipzig University's Systematic Botany and Functional Biodiversity unit, conducting research that bridges theoretical ecology with practical conservation applications across diverse ecosystems from urban green spaces to tropical biodiversity hotspots.
