Dr. Inge van Geijlswijk is a Clinical Professor at Utrecht University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, where she serves as Head of the Pharmacy Department and Director of Policy at the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS). As a hospital pharmacist-clinical pharmacologist, she specializes in antimicrobial resistance and prudent use of antimicrobials in veterinary medicine. Her work focuses on developing quantification tools for antimicrobial drug consumption and promoting antimicrobial stewardship across animal populations in the Netherlands.
Her research centers on Antimicrobial Drug Resistance, Prudent Use of Antimicrobials, Clinical Pharmacology, and Clinical Pharmacy. Dr. van Geijlswijk advocates for antimicrobial stewardship by stimulating awareness and education among professionals and veterinary students, emphasizing that antimicrobials should be viewed as non-renewable resources requiring careful management. She states that 'every day with antimicrobial treatment is a day of selecting antimicrobial resistant micro-organisms, especially in the microbiome.'
Her publication record demonstrates a strong focus on antimicrobial use monitoring, stewardship program implementation, and pharmacokinetics in veterinary species. Recent work examines seasonal patterns in antimicrobial use, evaluation of stewardship programs in companion animal clinics, and comparative analysis of antimicrobial consumption metrics across different animal populations and international contexts. This research bridges clinical practice with policy development to address the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance.
Dr. van Geijlswijk holds influential policy roles as the Dutch representative in the EMA Working Group for European surveillance of antimicrobial Sales and Use in veterinary medicine (ESUAvet) and as a member of the DDDvet and DCDvet methodology revision subgroup. She is also a member of the expert panel of the Netherlands Veterinary Medicines Institute (SDa), where she contributes to developing quantification tools for antimicrobial drug consumption in compliance with EU regulations.
